News Topical, Digital Desk : The Supreme Court has taken a strong stance on the incident of mistreatment and intimidation of judicial officers in Malda district, West Bengal. Calling it a serious attempt to obstruct the justice system, the court also questioned the state administration's functioning.
The Supreme Court bench, headed by Justice Surya Kant, stated that seven judicial officers, including three women, were left without security, food, and water for hours, which was deeply concerning. The court added that the state administration's failure to take timely action despite prior information demonstrates a grave administrative failure.
Notice to State Authorities
Taking strict action in this matter, the court has issued show cause notices to many senior officials including the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary and Director General of Police of the state.
The court questioned why proper security arrangements were not made in time and why judicial officers were left in this situation. The court stated clearly that this incident was a direct attack on the rule of law and would not be tolerated.
The Supreme Court directed the Election Commission to ensure the deployment of adequate central forces to protect judicial officers. The court also stated that there should be no obstruction during the SIR process and that officials should be allowed to carry out their work without fear. The court also directed that strict security measures be implemented at all locations and that public movement be restricted.
When will the next hearing be?
The court also ordered an immediate assessment of any threats to judicial officers and their families, and that necessary security be provided. It also ordered all relevant officials to appear virtually at the next hearing and submit a full report. The court clarified that it will take strict measures to ensure the safety of judicial officers and maintain law and order at all costs.
