News Topical, Digital Desk : A massive fire broke out in a Singapore-flagged cargo ship near the Kerala coast. There are also frequent explosions in the cargo ship. High flames are coming out from the central area and the 'container' bay of the ship. A cloud of smoke has also covered the sky.

Giving information about this incident, Indian Coast Guard officials said that the fire in the front has been controlled but thick smoke is coming out of the ship 'MV Wan Hai 503'. Indian Coast Guard ships 'Samudra Prahari' and 'Sachet' are conducting firefighting and cooling operations at sea to prevent the fire from spreading further. 

18 people including crew were rescued

Meanwhile, Coast Guard Ship 'Samartha' is being dispatched from Kochi with a team of rescue workers. Earlier, the defense spokesperson said that Indian Naval Ship INS Surat evacuated 18 crew members aboard the Singapore-flagged container ship while the firefighting operation continued overnight. The crew members were disembarked at Mangalore Port at 11.30 pm on Monday.

The defence spokesperson had said that Indian Coast Guard ships 'Sachet' and 'Samudra Prahari' were engaged in extinguishing the fire throughout the night. Meanwhile, the Coast Guard's Dornier aircraft left for an aerial survey of the site on Tuesday morning. The Singapore-flagged ship caught fire on Monday. The incident took place at 9.20 am Indian time, about 44 nautical miles from Azhikkal in Kannur district of Kerala and 130 nautical miles northwest of Kochi.
