Why is potassium important?

This study makes it clear that including potassium-rich foods in your diet can prove to be very beneficial for the heart. Actually, potassium  is very helpful in maintaining the balance of electrolytes, nerve signals, muscle contraction and controlling blood pressure . Foods rich in potassium

  • Banana- Banana is one of the best sources of potassium. A medium-sized banana contains about 422 mg of potassium. It also contains many other nutrients, which can prove to be very beneficial for health.
  • Sweet Potato- A medium-sized sweet potato has more potassium than a banana. It is also rich in fiber and vitamin A, making it a superfood for the heart.
  • Spinach- This green leafy vegetable is very rich in potassium. One cup of cooked spinach contains about 312 mg of potassium. It can be eaten by mixing it in vegetables, soup or dal.
  • Avocado- Avocado is an excellent source of healthy fats and potassium. One avocado contains about 1000 mg of potassium.
  • Coconut water- It is a treasure trove of natural electrolytes. It is a great way to overcome potassium deficiency while keeping the body hydrated.
  • Yogurt- Yogurt is a good source of both probiotics and potassium. One cup of plain yogurt contains about 579 mg of potassium. It is easy and beneficial to include it in your routine.

Keep in mind that while potassium is good for the heart, too much of it can be harmful, especially  for people with kidney disease  . So consult your doctor before making any major dietary changes.
