News Topical, Digital Desk : Nowadays, various types of supplements are promoted on social media and in advertisements. Every brand calls its product magical. Sometimes it claims to keep you young, sometimes it claims to reduce weight and sometimes it promises glowing skin, but are these supplements really as effective as they are claimed to be?
Collagen Supplement
It is often said that eating collagen makes the skin tight and shiny, but the truth is that when you eat collagen, it breaks down in your digestive system and becomes only amino acids. It does not reach your skin directly. Scientific research shows that a diet rich in protein and vitamin C is much more effective to show effect on the skin. Yes, some benefits of collagen have been found to be limited to reducing joint inflammation and protecting bones, not beyond that.
Fat Burners
Most of the 'fat burner' supplements sold in the market are actually loaded with caffeine. They give you temporary energy, but do not help in reducing fat in the long run. The only permanent way to lose weight is a balanced diet and regular exercise. The dream of becoming slim only by taking capsules without changing the lifestyle is futile.
Anti-aging supplements
Nowadays, supplements like NAD+, NMN and NR are touted as 'anti-aging' magic. Animal research has shown some benefits, but the results on humans are very weak and incomplete. Despite this, companies sell them at high prices, claiming to stop aging. The truth is that no concrete evidence has been found about their effect so far.
Detox Tea and Juice Cleanse
Hearing the name detox , most people think that all the dirt will be removed from the body, but the reality is that our liver and kidneys are already working to clean the body 24x7. Doctors say that expensive detox teas or juices only increase your washroom visits, nothing more than that.
Designer Probiotic
Some probiotics help digestion, but there is no solid scientific evidence behind the big claims like weight loss or detox. Doctors say that due to lax regulations in India, companies sell bottles ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 5000. In most cases, marketing goes far ahead of science.
Should you take supplements or not?
The truth is that most of the nutrition we need can be obtained from a balanced diet. Only those supplements are really necessary which the doctor advises you to take - like Vitamin-D, the deficiency of which is common in India or supplements like Vitamin-B12. Doctors say that the only thing more effective than any other supplement is proper diet, adequate sleep and regular exercise. This is the real health mantra, everything else is just a sham.
