News Topical, Digital Desk : China has issued a stern warning against the US's increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the military. China says that if AI is used without restraint in the military, the world could reach a dire situation similar to the one in the movie "Terminator."
US President Donald Trump's administration is pursuing a policy of unconditional use of AI startups in the military sector. Meanwhile, the Pentagon has approved Elon Musk's AI system, Grok, for use in secret military systems.
But on the other hand, AI company Anthropic was blacklisted because it refused to allow its 'cloud' model to be used in mass surveillance or fully automated lethal weapons.
What did China say?
China's Defense Ministry spokesman Jiang Bin said that if AI is used unrestrictedly in the military and algorithms are given the power to make life-or-death decisions, it will weaken the ethical rules of war and the technology could go out of control.
He also said that if this situation continues, the terrifying world depicted in the American film "Terminator" could one day become a reality. The 1984 film, starring actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, depicts a future where AI-controlled robots wage war against humans.
Dispute between the Pentagon and Anthropic
The dispute between the Pentagon and Anthropic erupted when the company stated that its technology should not be used for mass surveillance or fully automated weapons. This decision angered Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth. President Donald Trump subsequently ordered all federal agencies to stop using Anthropic's technology.
Hours later, Hegseth declared Anthropic a "supply-chain risk to national security" and barred military contractors and partner companies from engaging in any business dealings with it. However, the Pentagon was given six months to replace its systems.
