News Topical, Digital Desk : Despite US President Donald Trump's best efforts to win the Nobel Peace Prize, Venezuelan pro-democracy activist Maria Corina Machado received the prize. Trump made false claims about a ceasefire between India and Pakistan and unsuccessfully attempted to prevent the Russia-Ukraine war.
Speaking to reporters after the announcement, committee chairman Jørgen Vatne Fridnes explained why the President of the United States was overlooked and possibly never in the running for the award.
What did the committee chairman say?
He said, “I think this committee has seen every kind of campaign and media attention. We receive thousands of letters every year from people telling us what the path to peace is for them. But this committee sits in a room where there are portraits of all the laureates and that room is filled with courage and integrity. Therefore, we make our decision based solely on the work and will of Alfred Nobel.”
Who received this award last year?
The Nobel Committee described Machado as an "important, unifying figure." Last year, the prize was awarded to Japan's Nihon Hidankyo, a 69-year-old grassroots movement of survivors of the 1945 US bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which campaigns for the abolition of nuclear weapons.
