More than 800,000 homes are without electricity, forcing millions of people to live in darkness. Meanwhile, more than 10,000 flights have been canceled due to the inclement weather. The blizzard has claimed 30 lives in the United States.
A blizzard has gripped the eastern United States, bringing heavy snowfall and heavy rain to much of the region. The cold has suddenly intensified as temperatures plummeted.
NWS issued an alert
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a warning on Sunday, stating that relief from this blizzard is unlikely. Leaving your homes could be life-threatening. Therefore, people were urged to stay indoors.
According to the power outage, 850,000 people are without power. Cities in Tennessee, Mississippi, Texas, and Louisiana are being hardest hit. States like Kentucky, Georgia, Virginia, and Alabama are also experiencing power outages.
Millions affected by the storm
The NWS has forecast heavy to very heavy snowfall across the Ohio Valley. According to meteorologist Alison Santorelli,
This storm is unique because it has affected such a vast area. Spanning a 2,000-mile stretch from New Mexico to Texas and New England, it has affected approximately 213 million people.
Trump declares disaster
US President Donald Trump has also expressed concern. Calling the storm "historic," Trump has authorized the federal emergency declaration. Nearly 20 states across the US, including some cities in the District of Columbia, have declared states of emergency.
Sharing a post on Twitter on Saturday, Trump wrote, "We will monitor and stay in touch with all states in the path of this storm. I urge everyone to stay safe and be cautious about the cold."
