News Topical, Digital Desk : The Supreme Court will deliver its verdict on October 13 on petitions seeking an independent investigation into the Karur stampede that claimed 41 lives. A bench comprising Justices J.K. Maheshwari and N.V. Anjaria will deliver its verdict on the petitions.
While reserving its order on Friday, the apex court had questioned the Madras High Court's decision to constitute an SIT to probe the stampede and wondered how it proceeded with the matter. "We are unable to understand how this order was passed. When the division bench in Madurai was considering the matter, how did a single bench in Chennai proceed with the matter," it said.
Senior advocate Gopal Subramanium, appearing for Tamil actor Vijay's political party Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), had argued that the petition in the high court was filed only to prepare standard operating procedures (SOPs) for political rallies.
He said that the High Court had constituted the SIT on the very first day and the court made adverse remarks against the party and Vijay without even hearing his side.
