News Topical, Digital Desk : In today's fast-paced lives, ultra-processed foods like packaged snacks, cold drinks and ready-to-eat meals have become an important part of our diet.

But did you know that this craving for taste isn't just about obesity, but it's also directly affecting male fertility?  Yes, a recent study has made startling revelations on this subject. Let's find out what this study says.

What do the research data say?

A study led by Dutch researcher Dr. Romy Gaillard examined the relationship between modern diets and fertility. This research was conducted between 2017 and 2021. The study's unique findings included 831 women and 651 men to understand the impact of parents' diets before conception on the future child and fertility .

The study found that on average, ultra-processed foods comprised 22 percent of women's total diet, while this figure was slightly higher for men, at 25 percent.

Increased risk for men

The most worrying findings of this research concerned men. The data revealed that men who consumed high amounts of ultra-processed foods had a significantly increased risk of subfertility. Subfertility means that a man's fertility is lower than normal, resulting in a significantly longer time for his partner to conceive. This means that poor eating habits are directly reducing men's chances of becoming fathers and making conception more difficult.

Effects on women and fetal development

Although the study found that consuming ultra-processed foods didn't directly impact women's chances of conceiving, it did impact the baby's early development. According to the research, women who consumed large amounts of this type of food experienced impaired fetal development. In particular, the yolk sac was found to be smaller than normal. The yolk sac is crucial for fetal development, as it provides nutrition during the initial stages.
