News Topical, Digital Desk : Aam Aadmi Party MP Raghav Chadha raised the issue of delivery boy problems in the Rajya Sabha. The AAP MP said that delivery boys, who deliver within 10 minutes or as soon as possible after an order is placed, are the "unseen wheels of the Indian economy." Behind their silence is the need for employment and the insecurity surrounding it that forces them to risk their lives.
The unseen wheels of the Indian economy
Raising the issue in the Rajya Sabha during Zero Hour, Chadha said, "Delivery boys of Zomato and Swiggy, drivers of Ola and Uber, riders of Blinkit and Zepto and plumbers or beauticians of Urban Company are gig workers but in reality, these people are the unseen wheels of the Indian economy."
worse than daily wage labourers
He said that e-commerce and insta-delivery companies, which have brought significant changes in people's lives, have earned and are earning billions of rupees thanks to this 'silent workforce', but the condition of the workers who brought about this change and made these companies billionaires is worse than that of daily wage labourers.
These delivery boys risk their lives.
Chadha said that due to the pressure of high speed and delivery time, these gig workers fear that delays will result in a drop in their ratings, a deduction of incentives, a logout from the app, or a blockage of their ID. He added that this fear drives them to ignore red lights and risk their lives to rush through the delivery process.
Fear persists if orders are not placed on time
He said that even a 10-minute delay in delivery is a constant fear of customer anger. He added that when a delay occurs, the customer first calls the delivery person and scolds him, then threatens him with a complaint, and then gives him a one-star rating, ruining his month's hard work.
Work for 12-14 hours
Chadha said these workers work 12 to 14 hours a day, regardless of the weather. "They don't have safety equipment and don't receive any special bonuses or additional allowances. They face a situation of low income and high illness."
The government should think about them
Chadha further stated that these people are also someone's sons, brothers, husbands, and fathers. Their families depend on them. Chadha said the government should consider the problems of these gig workers and develop policies that can provide relief to them.
