News Topical, Digital Desk : The notice filed by the opposition to remove Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla could have been rejected due to flaws in the draft, but the Speaker himself directed officials to rectify it so that it could be listed at the earliest.

The notice, submitted to Lok Sabha Secretary General Utpal Kumar Singh on Tuesday afternoon, was signed by 118 opposition MPs. The opposition later withdrew the notice and submitted a new one, correcting the date.

Opposition gives no-confidence motion notice against Om Birla

Sources said the notice allegedly mentioned events from February 2025 four times, which could have led to its rejection under the rules. The Speaker directed the Lok Sabha Secretariat to rectify the defective notice and then proceed.

An official said Birla ordered immediate action as per the rules. Upon receipt of the revised notice, a review will be conducted promptly as per the rules. Opposition parties on Tuesday initiated the process to remove Birla from the post of Lok Sabha Speaker.

The Speaker relinquished the chairmanship pending the disposal of the ethics motion.

The parties allege that Birla has behaved in a biased manner in the House, due to which they have requested to step down from the chairmanship of the House till the matter is resolved.

Congress Lok Sabha Deputy Leader Gaurav Gogoi, Chief Whip K Suresh and Whip Mohammad Javed have submitted the notice to Lok Sabha Secretary General Utpal Kumar Singh under Article 94C of the Constitution on behalf of several opposition parties including Congress, Samajwadi Party and DMK.

Lok Sabha Secretariat officials said Birla, adhering to the highest standards of ethics, has decided not to occupy the Speaker's chair until the no-confidence motion against him is resolved. The no-confidence motion against the Speaker is likely to be discussed on March 9, officials said.
