News Topical, Digital Desk : In a major relief for Rhea Chakraborty, the Bombay High Court on Tuesday directed the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) to return the actress's passport, which the agency had seized in the 2020 drugs case linked to Sushant Singh Rajput's death. The passport was initially confiscated as part of her bail conditions. The court said that Rhea Chakraborty has complied with all the rules so far and there is no reason to doubt her during the trial proceedings.

what was the matter

On September 8, 2020, Rhea Chakraborty was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in the drugs case linked to the death of Sushant Singh Rajput on June 14, 2020. The actress, known for films like Mere Dad Ki Maruti and Jalebi, was granted bail in October 2020, but the court imposed a condition that her passport would remain with the NCB. She would have to seek court permission every time she traveled abroad.

The actress had filed a petition

Rhea Chakraborty recently filed a new petition, through her lawyer Ayaz Khan, seeking the release of her passport. Her lawyer argued that the continued seizure of her passport has caused her professional harm, as she frequently travels abroad for shooting, auditions, and meetings. Her lawyer stated that obtaining permission from the court involves a lengthy process. He further stated that Rhea Chakraborty has not violated any court orders since her release on bail.

NCB objection

The NCB opposed the petition, arguing that Rhea Chakraborty should not receive these benefits because of her celebrity status. The agency also stated that if she were allowed to travel abroad without restrictions, she would not return to India. However, a bench headed by Justice Neela Gokhale sided with Rhea Chakraborty. The court noted that other accused in the case had previously been granted similar relief.

The court further argued that Rhea Chakraborty had attended every hearing and had returned on time even when she had been granted permission to travel abroad. The bench said there was no reason to doubt her.

Passport received with these conditions

While ordering the return of her passport, the Bombay High Court also imposed certain conditions: Rhea Chakraborty must attend every hearing unless exempted by the lower court. If she is traveling abroad, she must provide complete details of her travel at least four days in advance. She must keep her phone switched on and inform agencies immediately upon her return.
