News Topical, Digital Desk : The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a PIL seeking systemic reforms in the investigation and drug safety mechanism in the wake of deaths of children in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan after consumption of toxic cough syrup. A bench comprising Chief Justice BR Gavai, Justice Ujjwal Bhuyan and Justice K Vinod Chandran dismissed the PIL filed by advocate Vishal Tiwari after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta raised objections.
Read the newspaper and file the petition – Solicitor Mehta
The Solicitor General said that the petitioners read the newspapers and came to the court to file the petition. The bench initially held the view that notice should be issued, but later dismissed the petition.
Appropriate legal mechanisms in the states
Mehta said he was not currently representing any state, but the seriousness with which states like Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh were taking action could not be underestimated. He said the states had proper law enforcement mechanisms in place.
When the bench asked the lawyer – how many petitions have been filed so far?
The bench asked Tiwari how many public interest litigations he had filed in the Supreme Court so far, and when he said he had filed eight to ten such petitions, the bench dismissed his petition. "(The petition) is dismissed," the Chief Justice said.
