News Topical, Digital Desk : The United States has announced a major overhaul of the "New G20" framework, introducing it in preparation for the G20 summit in Miami in 2026. Poland has been added to the G20 framework, while South Africa has been conspicuously excluded.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio alleged that South Africa is promoting "hate, division and a radical agenda" during its presidency. In a blog titled 'America Welcomes a New G20', Rubio said that the 2026 summit will be held on the 250th anniversary of the US and it will be the first time since 2009 that the US will host the G20.
What did Rubio say ?
Rubio said the US will include its friends and partners, with Poland being the most prominent. He cited Poland as an example of future-focused development and a successful partnership with the US. The biggest change is the exclusion of South Africa.
Rubio wrote that the country's post-apartheid prospects were undermined by redistributionist policies and racial quotas, which stifled investment and crippled the economy. According to him, the new G20 will work on three key themes through four working groups – reducing regulatory burdens, affordable and secure energy supply chains, and leadership in new technologies such as artificial intelligence.
