News Topical, Digital Desk : During the hearing of the Karur stampede case, the Supreme Court raised serious questions about the functioning of the Madras High Court. The Supreme Court stated that something was wrong with the way cases were listed and heard in the High Court, and that answers were needed.
A Supreme Court bench of Justices JK Maheshwari and Vijay Vishnoi made this comment after receiving a report from the Registrar General of the Madras High Court. The court issued a notice and also made the Madras High Court Registrar a party to the case. Justice Maheshwari said, “ Something wrong is happening in the High Court; we need to look into it. ”
SC 's displeasure
The Supreme Court has previously expressed displeasure during the hearing of TVK 's petition. TVK 's petition only sought guidelines for road shows, but the Chennai bench directly ordered an SIT investigation. This order was contrary to the Madurai bench's earlier order, which had prohibited a CBI investigation. The two separate orders concerned the Supreme Court, and it requested a detailed report from the High Court.
The case relates to the stampede at a TVK rally on September 27 , which killed 41 people and injured more than 60. Senior advocate NK Kaul, representing the Tamil Nadu government, said the government had filed its response and wanted a hearing.
Supreme Court opinion
The state government also demanded that the stay on the CBI probe imposed by the Supreme Court be lifted and the one-member inquiry commission (headed by Justice Aruna Jagadeesan) be allowed to continue its work.
The Supreme Court stated that it first wants to understand what the commission will do, so it will decide on this issue later. For now, the court simply wants to see how cases are being listed and heard in the Madras High Court.
