Let's know what is the best sleeping position and what are the advantages and disadvantages of different sleeping positions.

Sleeping on the side

Side sleeping is the most common and considered beneficial for health. There are many benefits of sleeping on the side, such as-

  • Relief from Sleep Apnea and Snoring – This position is better for those who snore while sleeping or suffer from sleep apnea as it keeps the air pipe open.
  • Best for pregnant women – Doctors advise pregnant women to sleep on the left side, as this improves blood circulation and nutrients reach the baby easily.
  • Improves digestion- Sleeping on the left side relaxes the digestive system and  reduces acid reflux problems .

However, there are some disadvantages of sleeping in this position, such as-

  • Shoulder and hip pain – Sleeping on the same side for a long period of time can put pressure on the shoulder or hip.
  • Wrinkles on the face- Sleeping on one side puts pressure on the face, which  can cause wrinkles .

Straight Gold

Sleeping straight is natural and comfortable for many people. But this position also has its own advantages and disadvantages, such as-

  • Good for the spine: This position keeps the spine in a neutral position, which reduces back and neck pain.
  • Good for facial skin – Since the face does not come in contact with the pillow, the risk of wrinkles and acne is reduced.
  • Helps in acid reflux- Sleeping with the head slightly elevated reduces the problem of acid reflux.

Loss-

  • Snoring and sleep apnea may increase – Sleeping straight can cause the tongue to slide towards the back of the throat, causing difficulty in breathing.
  • Not good for pregnant women – Sleeping on the back for a long time can affect blood circulation.

Sleeping on your stomach

Sleeping on the stomach is the least recommended position, although some people find it comfortable, there are more disadvantages of sleeping in this position.

  • Pressure on the neck and back- The neck remains bent in this position, which can cause pain.
  • Effect on the spine: Sleeping on the stomach affects the natural curve of the spine, which can cause back pain in the long run.
  • Harmful to the skin – Pressing your face against the pillow can lead to wrinkles and breakouts.

What is the best position?

Generally, sleeping on the side (especially on the left side) is considered best, especially for people suffering from back pain, pregnancy and sleep apnea.
