Dr. Lakshya Bhaktyani, a physiotherapist at PSRI Hospital, told The Indian Express that certain sleep positions can actually accelerate skin aging. According to him, sleeping on your side or stomach causes your face to press against the pillow, creating friction and pressure. This, over time, can lead to the formation of sleep lines, which can eventually develop into permanent wrinkles. These wrinkles are particularly visible around the cheeks, forehead, and chin. Sleeping on your side also increases the risk of sagging skin around the jaw and neck due to gravity.

It affects the skin

Many people notice swelling or creases on their face when they wake up in the morning. These are usually temporary and caused by pressure or fluid retention during sleep. However, if this pattern persists daily over a long period of time, the skin's collagen structure and elasticity can gradually be affected. Persistent swelling can sometimes be a sign of poor lymphatic drainage or an underlying problem, although in most cases it's related to pressure on the face during sleep.

Choosing the right pillow and fabric can also help protect your skin. According to Dr., silk or satin pillowcases create less friction than cotton, leading to fewer creases. Orthopedic or memory foam pillows provide better support and reduce pressure on your face. When it comes to the best sleeping position for your skin, sleeping on your back is considered the safest. This prevents direct pressure on your face. Sleeping with your head slightly elevated can also help prevent fluid buildup around your eyes, reducing morning puffiness.
