News Topical, Digital Desk : You may have seen people on social media these days spraying a substance called hypochlorous acid (HOCl) on their faces, beds, and even kitchen counters.

It's claimed to do everything from cure acne to sanitize the home.  But is it really that effective, or is it just a social media hype? Let's find out.

How is it beneficial for the skin?

Hypochlorous acid has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which are helpful in preventing infection and reducing inflammation.

  • Germ Killer – It can kill bacteria, viruses, and fungus on the skin, helping with problems like eczema and  acne .
  • Safe for sensitive skin – The best part is that it works without damaging the skin barrier , so even those with sensitive skin can use it with ease.
  • Helpful in wound healing – Doctors also recommend it for minor burns, insect bites and quick healing of wounds.

Helpful and safe in cleaning the house

HOCl isn't just a beauty product, it's also an excellent disinfectant. It can kill viruses and bacteria on surfaces. Compared to harsh chemicals like bleach, it's much safer to use around children and pets. You can also use it on household surfaces and clothing.

What is the correct way to use it?

  • After Cleansing – Spray it after washing your face and before applying serum or moisturizer.
  • Let it dry - After spraying, let it dry before applying other products. Spray it onto a cotton pad and pat it in.
  • Start slowly – use 1-2 times a week initially. If your skin tolerates it, you can increase it to 2-3 times a day.

Does it have any disadvantages?

Although HOCl is safe for most people, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Patch Test – As with any new product, be sure to test it on a small patch before applying it to a larger area of the body.
  • Allergies and dryness – Some people may be allergic to it or may experience dryness in the skin.
  • Check the ingredients - Always choose products that don't contain fragrance or alcohol. Products with a low concentration of 0.01% to 0.02% and a pH between 4 and 6 are most effective.
