Night sleep is very important for health. The mistake of ignoring its importance can make you vulnerable to many serious diseases. Recently, a study conducted by the Neurology Department of AIIMS has revealed that the symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and poor quality of sleep hurt the brain.

The study, which analyzed data from 6,795 individuals, including 49 percent women aged 50 years and above, revealed that OSA works to weaken cells in the part of the brain where memory is stored and information is processed. Its effect has been recorded in the form of decreased understanding power in people aged 50-60.

What is obstructive sleep apnea?

According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, obstructive sleep apnea occurs when during sleep you experience interruptions in breathing for more than 10 seconds at least 5 times per hour (on average) during the entire sleep period. This is a genetic problem. Apart from this, its risk is higher in people who suffer from chronic nasal congestion, thyroid disorders, menopause, obesity, defects in the tissues supporting the head and neck, Down syndrome, and smoke.

Symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea

Some people have obstructive sleep apnea without any symptoms. In many people, this problem is seen in the form of symptoms like snoring, morning headache, frequent sleepiness during the day, getting easily irritated, depression, and difficulty in remembering things.

The effect of OSA on the brain may be reduced.

Investigative Dr. Kameshwar Prasad, emeritus professor of neurology, AIIMS, and now head of neurology, Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj, told The Times of India that individuals who have poor sleep quality or have any signs of OSA may have memory loss. However one should take advantage of the treatment to avoid any adverse effects.

Keep these things in mind for good sleep

Giving tips to get good sleep, Dr. Manjari Tripathi, another study member and head of Neurology, AIIMS, said that a person should sleep and wake up at the same time every day. Along with this, consumption of alcohol, caffeine, nicotine, and other stimulants should be reduced. Especially after 2 pm. Do meditation in the evening or night or do mind-relaxing exercises. Eat food at least 3 hours before sleeping. Keep in mind that dinner should not be too spicy.
