
News Topical, Digital Desk : Congress has suffered a major setback before the municipal elections in Maharashtra. Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee Vice President Kailash Gorantyal resigned from the primary membership of the party on Tuesday (July 29). He will now join BJP. In a letter sent to Maharashtra Congress President Harshvardhan Sapkal, Gorantyal has cited personal reasons behind his resignation.
What did Kailash Gorantyal say while resigning?
Kailash Gorantyal wrote, “I have been a dedicated worker of Congress for the last 30-35 years. However, due to personal reasons I am now unable to continue working for the party.”
Said to join BJP
Earlier on Monday (28 July), Gorantyal had said that I am going to join BJP, this decision has been taken. The date of joining will be given within two to four days. A large number of people will join BJP with us.
He said, "I have met BJP leaders Raosaheb Danve, Narayan Kuche and Babanrao Lonikar."
The defection of leaders continues before the municipal elections to be held in Maharashtra by the end of this year. There are indications that many more leaders may change their party in the coming days.
Kailash Gorantyal had lost in the assembly elections
In the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections, Gorantyal contested from Jalna seat. He was defeated by Shiv Sena candidate Arjun Khotkar. Arjun Khotkar got 104665 votes. At the same time, Gorantyal got 73014 votes and lost by 31651 votes. Independent candidate Abdul Hafeez stood third. He got 30454 votes.
After this defeat, Gorantyal openly criticized the Congress leadership. He alleged that the party delayed the announcement of his candidature and did not provide enough support for his election campaign. Gorantyal has been elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in 1999, 2009 and 2019.
