Navratri begins with the ritual of Ghatasthapana (installation of the Kalash) and sowing of barley, also known as Kalash Sthapana. This tradition has deep spiritual and mythological roots.

Why is barley sown?

Barley has always been considered the first and most auspicious grain. It is not only a food item, but also a symbol of prosperity, vitality, and fertility. The tradition of sowing barley on the first day of Navratri symbolizes that the coming year will be filled with happiness, peace, prosperity, and financial stability in the home. If the barley sprouts healthily and quickly, it is considered an auspicious sign for the entire year, bringing success, happiness, and positive energy to the family.

However, if there is any obstruction to their growth, it is considered a sign of future challenges and problems. Not only physically, but also spiritually, the sprouting of barley symbolizes the grace and power of Goddess Durga. Those who sow and nurture barley with faith and devotion receive positive energy and auspicious results.

Method of sowing barley-

  • On the first day of Navratri, along with the installation of Kalash, clean soil is filled in an earthen pot.
  • Barley is sown in this vessel and it is placed in front of the mother.
  • Water is offered regularly for nine days.
  • Sprouting of barley is considered a symbol of energy, progress and auspicious results in life.
  • The faster and stronger the barley sprouts, the more auspicious and beneficial it is considered for the family.
