According to Japanese media reports, residents of Toyoake city in Japan will now be able to use smartphones for only two hours a day.
Toyokake Mayor Masami Koki announced that the city's assembly will soon vote on a draft ordinance that would allow residents to spend up to two hours a day on smartphones, tablets and computers, in addition to work and school obligations.
If the rule is agreed upon, it will be implemented in Toyoke from October. Let us tell you that such a rule has already been made and implemented in the Japanese city of Kagawa in the year 2020.
What will happen if the rules are violated?
Koki clarified that there will be no financial or criminal penalties for violating this ordinance. He said that limiting screen time to two hours is only a guideline.
The bill aims to protect residents from the negative impacts on health and daily life caused by excessive use of smartphones.
Why was this decision taken?
A survey in Japan in March found that young people in the country spend an average of five hours a day on their phones, tablets and computers. Koki believes that excessive phone use can lead to problems such as sleep problems and mental health problems.
What does the rule say?
- Children and adults, young and old will not use the phone after a certain time.
- After school, students will be able to use smartphones only for two hours a day.
- Children from classes 1 to 5 should not use the phone after 9 pm and older children should not use the phone after 10 pm.
