What is Bhadra period?
According to religious Puranas, Bhadra is the daughter of Sun God and sister of Shani Dev. Her nature is very harsh and she causes unrest. She has been given a special place in the Panchang for time calculation. Due to her nature, it is always advised to do auspicious and mangal works before or after Bhadra.
Why don't we tie Rakhi during Bhadra?
Bhadra Kaal is considered inauspicious and hence it is forbidden to do any auspicious work during this Muhurta. According to the legend, when Bhadra was born, she started creating havoc in the whole universe and used to create obstacles wherever auspicious works like worship and rituals were performed. Therefore, she was sent to the netherworld so that worship and rituals can be performed on earth without any hindrance. But Bhadra comes to earth for some time and that time is considered inauspicious.
According to another legend, Shurpanakha tied a Rakhi to her brother Ravana during Bhadra period. Due to which Ravana and his entire clan were destroyed. Therefore it is said that one should not tie a Rakhi to a brother during Bhadra period. Apart from this, another reason is that Lord Shiva performs Tandava during Bhadra period and becomes very angry. If any auspicious work is done during such a time, then one may have to face the wrath of Lord Shiva.
