News Topical, Digital Desk : Senior Thai leader Anutin Charnvirakul was on Sunday appointed as the country's new Prime Minister after getting royal approval. He was elected to the post by the Parliament two days ago. Charnvirakul was made the Prime Minister at a time when his predecessor Patongtorn Shinawatra was removed from the post on the orders of the court. Patongtorn Shinawatra was the youngest Prime Minister of Thailand, but she could remain in this post for only one year.
Why did Patongtorn Shinawatra have to step down from the post of Prime Minister?
Anutin (58) replaced Prime Minister Patongtorn Shinawatra, who was removed by a court last week over a leaked phone call with Senate President Hun Sen of neighbouring Cambodia, which was seen as a violation of ethics rules. Anutin previously served as deputy prime minister in Patongtorn's cabinet. Patongtorn resigned from his post and withdrew his party's support in the coalition government amid the controversy over the leaked phone call.
Charnvirakul took oath as PM
Anutin Charnvirakul was handed the letter of appointment at a ceremony held at the Bangkok headquarters of his party, Bhumjaithai. The ceremony was also attended by senior members of parties likely to join the coalition government. At his swearing-in ceremony, Anutin said, "I swear that I am determined to perform my duties with full ability, honesty and integrity."
