Pakistani authorities have begun a fresh push to sell the state-run airline. Plans to privatise cash-strapped Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) have been brewing for several years.

Serious efforts were made in 2024, but were unsuccessful. The government failed to attract any major buyer. The only bidder offered only Rs 10 billion, which was rejected.

Privatization expected by May

Privatisation and Investment Minister Abdul Aleem Khan had said last month that all steps for the privatisation of PIA would be completed by May. A meeting of the Privatisation Commission was held on Wednesday. It was chaired by the commission's chairman and Prime Minister's adviser on privatisation Muhammad Ali.

They have decided to start the sale process from next week. The commission has also approved the pre-qualification criteria for selection of potential bidders for privatisation of 51 per cent to 100 per cent shares of Pakistan International Airlines Corporation Limited (PIACL).
