Pakistan also capitalized on America's displeasure with China over rare earth minerals. Seizing the opportunity, Pakistan struck a $500 million rare earth mineral deal with the US, sending sample shipments to the US. It also opened its doors to American agricultural products.

Before Pakistan, the US was pressuring India to open up its agricultural sector. Meanwhile, China had banned the purchase of soybeans from the US. The US also appreciated this Pakistani stance.

Trump himself called Pakistan a "treacherous country." Michael Kugerman, former director of the South Asia Institute at the Wilson Center, says Pakistan benefited from aggressive lobbying efforts, signing $5 million in deals with six Washington-based firms.
