News Topical, Digital Desk : If you can't send snaps or load messages on Snapchat today, you're not alone. The popular social media app was one of several major online platforms affected by a major outage involving Amazon Web Services (AWS) on Monday.
Amazon has confirmed that its cloud services unit AWS was experiencing issues, affecting several websites and apps worldwide. “We can confirm increased error rates and latency for several AWS services in the US-EAST-1 region,” the company said in an update on its official page. The outage affected several digital services that rely on AWS infrastructure – including Snapchat, Robinhood, Perplexity AI, and Coinbase, among others.
AWS held responsible for the outage
AI startup Perplexity and cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase both blamed AWS for the issue. Perplexity CEO Arvind Srinivas said in a Twitter post earlier this month, "Perplexity is currently down. The cause is an AWS issue. We're working on a fix."
DownDetector, a site that tracks service outages, showed an increase in outage reports for Amazon.com, Prime Video, and several Amazon services, including Alexa. PayPal's payment app, Venmo, was also affected.
When will the service be fixed?
Outages at AWS often impact the internet, as many popular apps and platforms rely on its servers to operate. By Monday evening, some services had begun to recover, though users continued to report intermittent connectivity issues on social media.
