New Delhi: There are nearly 62,000 cases pending in various high courts that are more than 30 years old and three of these cases are awaiting disposal since 1952. According to official data, four cases are pending in the high courts since 1954 and nine since 1955. Of the three cases pending since 1952, two are in the Calcutta High Court and one in the Madras High Court.
More than five crore cases are pending in various courts, including district courts, high courts and the Supreme Court. Addressing the national conference of district judiciary earlier this week, President Draupadi Murmu called for a change in the "culture of seeking adjournments" in the judiciary.
About 2.45 lakh cases are pending in the High Courts
He had said that long pending cases are a big challenge before the judiciary. All the parties have to give priority to this problem and find a solution to it. According to the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG), there are about 2.45 lakh cases pending in the High Courts, which are 20 to 30 years old.
Law Minister announced to break the notion
Addressing the same event, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal had called for breaking the notion that Indian courts follow a date-on-date culture. Analysis of pending cases shows that the parties involved in litigation either do not appear or are not interested in pursuing the case. 25 to 30 percent of such cases can be closed in one go.
