Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala). Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, Shashi Tharoor gave his reaction on the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Tharoor expressed his sympathy and solidarity with the doctors. The Congress MP also targeted the central government.
Demand was raised to bring a bill
Shashi Tharoor told ANI on Sunday that my sympathies and solidarity are with the doctors. For at least two years I have been speaking in Parliament on the issue of violence against doctors. I had a little debate with the then Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. I argued that the government should bring a bill to specifically protect medical professionals during their duties.
What answer did the government give?
Tharoor further said that the government gave me a very strange reply that if they start doing this for one profession then they will have to do it for other professions too. This is a ridiculous argument. I am shocked and saddened that despite all these efforts to raise public and government awareness about this, another doctor had to lose his life.
Last year Tharoor had raised the demand for making a law
Let us tell you that in August 2023, Shashi Tharoor had demanded a law to protect doctors and health workers from violence at the workplace. He also appealed to provide financial and legal assistance to the victims of such violence. During this, Tharoor mentioned a female doctor who lost her life in Kerala.
Instructions to increase security of doctors in Bengal
On the other hand, the Governor's Office of West Bengal contacted the medical colleges of the state on Sunday and directed them to provide adequate security to women doctors and paramedical staff. The CBI team investigating the case also did 3D laser mapping of the emergency ward of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the matter. A bench headed by Supreme Court Chief Justice DY Chandrachud will hear the case on August 20.
