Imphal: Following protests by women in Manipur's Imphal West district, authorities on Saturday cancelled curfew relaxations in Imphal East, Imphal West and Bishnupur as the administration had anticipated massive protests by women in these districts.
Tension prevailed on Saturday afternoon as hundreds of women gathered outside the Singjamei police station in Imphal West district to protest against the tear gas shells fired at a nine-month pregnant woman during a student protest earlier this week.
The 34-year-old woman's baby was born dead and she herself is said to be in a critical condition at the Regional Medical Institute in Imphal. The angry women protesters accused the authorities of killing the unborn child and leaving the mother in a critical condition. On the other hand, senior police officials kept trying to persuade the women protesters not to violate curfew orders and return to their homes.
