News Topical, Digital Desk : A major change is about to come to the US dollar banknotes. President Donald Trump's signature will now appear on the new paper notes. This will be the first time in American history that a sitting president will be featured on his own currency. The Treasury Department announced Thursday that this move is being taken to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the country's independence. This will break a 165-year-old tradition dating back to 1861. Until now, only the Treasury Secretary and the Treasurer of the United States have signed notes. The Treasurer's signature will be removed.
New printing will start from June
According to the Treasury, new $100 notes, bearing the signatures of President Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, will begin printing in June. Other denominations will be issued in a similar fashion later.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant said that under Trump's leadership, the United States is moving towards economic strength. Putting his name on the dollar is a great way to commemorate the country's achievements.
Trump's picture also on gold coin
Additionally, a special 24-karat gold commemorative coin will be issued to mark the 250th anniversary of Independence Day. It depicts Trump leaning on the Resolute Desk with his fist clenched. The US Commission of Fine Arts has approved the design. While
the signature on the note is new, a living president's image has appeared on a commemorative coin once before. While the image of a living president is legally prohibited from appearing on ordinary currency, the administration is viewing this as a commemorative coin.
