Dispur (Assam): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma raised questions about the 'Mecca'-like gate of Meghalaya University. The CM said on Monday that the architecture of the building resembles Mecca, one of the holiest places in Islam. This gate is the University of Science and Technology of Meghalaya.

Earlier, CM Himanta Sarma had blamed the ongoing construction work at the university for the flash floods in Guwahati. He had said that forests and hills were cut down at the university located in Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya, which led to flash floods.

You have to go below the Mecca- CM

Talking to an English newspaper, he said, "It is shameful to go there, you have to go under the Mecca. What we are saying is that there should also be a Namghar (community prayer hall, part of the neo-Vaishnav tradition of Assam) there. Make all three, Mecca-Medina and church. They have built a Mecca there. Let them build a Namghar, let them build a church. We will walk under all three, why will we walk under just one?"

Sarma mentioned former CM Tarun Gogoi

CM attacked and said that the university administration which I call the father of Jihad is involved in that work. He said that when I talked about Meghalaya University of Science and Technology, everyone criticized me, but before this former CM Tarun Gogoi had said that Jorabat is the main reason for floods in Guwahati.

The hills were cut towards Guwahati, not Meghalaya

CM Himanta Sarma claimed that the hills were cut not towards Meghalaya but towards Guwahati. He said, "Why were the hills cut towards Guwahati and not towards Meghalaya? Is this not flood jihad?"

The university is run by a foundation

Let us tell you that the university is being run by a foundation. It was started by a Bengali Muslim named Mehboobul Haque. Haque is the Chancellor of the university. Pointing to the three domes built above the main gate of the university, Sarma has claimed that it looks like Mecca and Medina.
