News Topical, Digital Desk : The Israeli ambassador to the US said after the operation that if Israel failed to kill Hamas leaders in an airstrike on Qatar on Tuesday, it would succeed the next time. This operation has raised concerns that it will thwart efforts to ensure a ceasefire in Gaza.

"We have warned the terrorists, wherever they are, that we will pursue them and destroy those who seek to destroy us," Yechiel Leiter said in a speech at the US Capitol complex on Wednesday. Israel on Tuesday stepped up its military action after attempting to kill Hamas political leaders in the Qatari capital Doha.

The US has described it as a unilateral attack that does not advance American and Israeli interests. The airstrike came shortly after Hamas claimed responsibility for a shooting at a bus stop on the outskirts of Jerusalem on Monday that killed six people. The widely condemned Doha operation was particularly sensitive as Qatar has been hosting and mediating talks aimed at ensuring a ceasefire in the Gaza war.

US President Donald Trump had a heated conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday and told him that his decision to target Hamas inside Qatar was unwise, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Diplomatic issues

In his speech at an event marking the fifth anniversary of the Abraham Accords, which normalized relations between Israel and some Muslim-majority countries, Yechiel Leiter criticized Qatar. "Isn't Qatar funding and supporting terrorism by hosting Hamas, while they are the ones who sent the terrorists who killed six people at a bus stop in Jerusalem to go to work?" Leiter said.

The UN Security Council postponed its meeting scheduled for Wednesday until Thursday at Qatar's request so that the country's Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani could attend. Al-Thani told CNN on Wednesday that discussions were underway with regional allies to respond to the Israeli attacks and that leaders would meet in Doha in the near future.

When asked if Doha would close Hamas' political office, he said his government was "reassessing everything" about what steps it would take. “We are in very detailed talks with the United States government and we need to understand what the way forward will be,”

Israel attacks Houthis in Yemen

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dismissed global condemnation of operations like the one on Doha, expanding military operations in the Middle East and severely weakening Israel's Iran-backed enemies since Hamas threatened to invade Israel in 2023. On Wednesday, Israel attacked the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, following an attack in August that killed Houthi Prime Minister Ahmed Ghalib al-Rahawi and other cabinet ministers.

Witnesses said Wednesday's attack targeted the Houthi defense ministry The Israeli military confirmed it had carried out a strike in Yemen. Since the start of the war in Gaza, the Houthis have been attacking ships in the Red Sea in what they describe as acts of solidarity with the Palestinians.

Khalil al-Hayya's son killed

Arab diplomacy Hamas said five of its members were killed in the Doha attack, including the son of its exiled Gaza chief and top negotiator Khalil al-Hayya. It said its top leaders survived. The attack sparked a surge in diplomacy among Arab states. United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan arrived in Qatar on Wednesday, the UAE's state-run news agency WAM reported.

Jordan's Crown Prince Hussein was also expected in Qatar, while Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was expected in Doha on Thursday, an official with knowledge of the matter told Reuters. The visits were a show of regional solidarity with Qatar after the Israeli attacks, the official said. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the European Commission would propose sanctions on extremist Israeli ministers and suspending trade-related measures in the EU's agreement with Israel.

The proposals reflect the EU's growing criticism of the Israeli handling of the war in Gaza and mounting pressure on the EU's executive body to act. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said Germany, one of Israel's staunchest supporters, has taken note of the proposals targeting Israel and will participate in talks on future measures.

The Doha airstrike comes after Israel warned Palestinians to leave Gaza city, once home to nearly one million people, as it seeks to destroy what remains of Hamas. The US says the impact on ceasefire talks is unclear. Asked what impact the attack would have on ceasefire talks, US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee said he did not know. Hamas has rejected everything.
