Sharma Oli was arrested on Saturday (March 28, 2026) in connection with the investigation into the Genji protests that took place in Nepal last September. The newly formed cabinet, chaired by Nepal's new Prime Minister Balendra Shah Balen, decided to immediately implement the commission's report at a meeting on Friday (March 27, 2026). Nepal's Home Minister Sudan Gurung reacted to this. He posted on the social media platform Facebook, writing, "No one is above the law. We have arrested former Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli and outgoing Home Minister Ramesh Lekhar. This is not revenge; it is simply the beginning of justice. I am confident that the country will now take a new direction."
Nepal Police said Oli, chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist-Leninist (CPN-UML), was arrested early Saturday morning from Gundu area of Bhaktapur district, 12 km east of Kathmandu. Former Home Minister and Nepali Congress leader Ramesh Lekhak was also arrested from his residence in Katunje, Suryavinayak Municipality, Bhaktapur district, it said. Oli and Lekhak were arrested for their alleged involvement in suppressing the 'Jenji' movement that took place on September 8 and 9 last year. 76 people, including several youths, were killed in the movement.

A commission formed to investigate the events related to the Zenji movement has recommended legal action against Oli and others, including the writer, in a criminal case. Nepal's newly formed government, led by Balendra Shah, decided to immediately implement the commission's recommendations in its first cabinet meeting on Friday. Police said Oli and the writer have been detained at the Kathmandu District Police Circle in Bhadrakali. The commission has recommended a prison sentence of three to 10 years for the crime.
