News Topical, Digital Desk : US President Donald Trump has warned that NATO faces a dire future if its allies don't help reopen the Strait of Hormuz, sending a strong message to European countries to join his war efforts against Iran.
Trump also said in an interview with the Financial Times that he might postpone a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping this month, as he continues to pressure China to open the Strait of Hormuz.
'Europe and China are more dependent on this oil'
"It's absolutely right that those who profit from this strait help make sure nothing bad happens there," Trump said, arguing that unlike the US, Europe and China are heavily dependent on oil from the Gulf region.
He added, "If there is no response or a negative response, I think it will be very bad for the future of NATO."
Trump, who has often criticized the NATO alliance, said, "We have something called NATO. We didn't need them in Ukraine. Ukraine is thousands of miles away from us, but we helped them. Now we'll see if they can help us. I've been saying for a long time that we'll be there for them, but they won't be there for us."
Trump wants Europe's help
Trump indicated he wanted European commando teams or other military assistance to eliminate Iranians who are causing trouble in the Gulf region with drones and naval mines.
"We're hitting them very hard. They have nothing left to do but mess around in the Strait, but these guys are going to profit from it, and they need to help us monitor it. We'll help them, but they need to be there. You need a lot of people to monitor a few people," Trump said.
