News Topical, Digital Desk : US President Donald Trump met Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky on Wednesday during the NATO summit. During this, important talks took place between the two leaders regarding the Russia-Ukraine war. Trump said that the increase in defense spending by the trans-Atlantic alliance could play an important role in curbing Russia's aggressive policies in the future.
NATO country made a big announcement
In this summit, NATO member countries have agreed to increase their defense expenditure to 5 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP) by the year 2035 in view of the Russia-Ukraine war. This decision has been taken at a time when the war with Russia in Ukraine has entered its third year.
Trump said- we will solve this war soon
"If Europe takes more responsibility for its security, it will help avoid the horrors of conflict not only with Russia, but with any neighboring country in the future. My hope is that we will resolve this war soon," Trump said at a press conference held at the conclusion of the summit. Trump also reiterated that Russian President Vladimir Putin is keen to end the war in Ukraine. This war started with Moscow's invasion of Kiev in February 2022.
Trump-Zelensky's second meeting after the clash in the White House
This was the second direct meeting between Trump and Zelensky after a sharp exchange at the White House earlier this year. Earlier in April, the two leaders had a brief meeting at St. Peter's Basilica during the funeral of Pope Francis. Zelensky described this meeting as "meaningful" and thanked Trump for US support in a post on social media. He wrote, "We discussed the ceasefire and the path to real peace. We also talked about how to ensure the safety of our citizens."
Trump gives guarantees to NATO
Meanwhile, Trump on Wednesday also reaffirmed his support for NATO's mutual defense guarantee (Article 5). A day earlier, he had expressed doubts about this commitment, which caused a wave of concern in the 32-member alliance. But within about 24 hours, he clarified his stand and said, "I stand with NATO's collective security guarantee."
Differences over Ukraine's NATO membership
This meeting between Trump and Zelensky has come at a time when Ukraine needs new military aid for the war against Russia and there are differences over Ukraine's membership within NATO. Still, the signal is clear that the US-led alliance is taking concrete steps towards maintaining strategic unity against Russia.
