News Topical, Digital Desk : Elon Musk's threat to stop using SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft for NASA could be a major blow to the space agency and the Pentagon. This could deprive the agency of the only American vehicle capable of carrying astronauts to the International Space Station.
The threat posted on X came during a growing feud between the world's richest man and President Donald Trump, after Trump threatened to cancel all federal contracts of Musk's company. However, several hours after the threat, Musk said that okay, we will not shut down the Dragon.
NASA's future plans ruined?
The Washington Post reported that severing ties could put NASA, the Pentagon and intelligence agencies at odds, given SpaceX's importance to many federal programs. Over the past few years, SpaceX has played a key role in launching sensitive national security payloads.
NASA press secretary Bethany Stevens did not say how NASA would get its astronauts to the space station without SpaceX if Musk does indeed do so.
He only said that NASA would continue to work on the president's vision for the space program. Tesla's shares rose four percent after a $152 billion sell-off amid the controversy.
Republicans urge Trump and Musk to end their feud
The Republican Party is afraid of the possible consequences of the ongoing conflict between President Donald Trump and Elon Musk. It is urging both of them to reduce tensions. The conflict between the two can make the path ahead for the party difficult.
"I hope this doesn't distract us from doing the work we need to do," Washington State Republican Representative Dan Newhouse said. "I think they'll mend their relationship." By Friday afternoon, Musk had posted about his various companies on the Internet media rather than attacking the president.
