News Topical, Digital Desk : A shocking truth about begging has come to light on the streets of Indore, Madhya Pradesh's economic capital. Mangilal, a beggar who had been begging in the Sarafa area for a long time, was actually the owner of property worth crores. When Mangilal was rescued as part of a campaign to eradicate begging run by the Women and Child Development Department,

not only officials but also ordinary people were shocked to learn about his rescued identity. Mangilal, who used to navigate the streets of Sarafa with a wooden sliding cart, a bag on his back, and shoes in his hand, garnered sympathy, earning between 500 and 1000 rupees daily. He would stand near people without saying a word, and people would give him money.

The beggar used to lend money on interest

During interrogation, Mangilal admitted that he used the money he earned from begging to lend money to certain traders in the bullion market. He would lend money on interest rates based on daily and weekly interest rates and would visit the bullion market daily to collect the interest.

There are three concrete houses in different areas

Dinesh Mishra, the nodal officer for the rescue team, said that Mangilal owns three concrete houses in different areas of the city. He owns a 16-by-45-foot three-story house in Bhagat Singh Nagar. He also owns another 600-square-foot concrete house in Shivnagar and a 10-by-20-foot one-bedroom house in Alwas.

He has his own car and runs an auto on rent.

Additionally, a house was provided by the government with the help of the Red Cross on the basis of disability. Furthermore, Mangilal owns three auto-rickshaws, which he rents out. He also owns a Desire car, which he has hired a driver to drive. He lives with his parents in Alvasa, while his two brothers live separately.

According to the District Program Officer, a campaign to free Indore from begging has been underway since February 2024. Initial surveys identified 6,500 beggars, of whom 4,500 were counseled and freed from begging. 1,600 beggars were rescued and sent to the Sevadham Ashram in Ujjain, while 172 children were enrolled in schools.
