Today we are going to tell you the interesting story of the costume making of Mogambo in Mr. India, which took 7 days to make and the designer also charged a hefty fee.
How was Mogambo's look created?
In fact, the look of Mr. India's villain, Mogambo, was designed by renowned designer Madhav Agasti. Agasti detailed the story behind it in his book, Stitching Stardom: For Icons, On and Offscreen. He wrote, "The film's director, Shekhar Kapur, and producer, Boney Kapoor, visited my shop. They told me they wanted a villain costume that would combine a foreign dictator and a local landlord."
For this, we conducted extensive research on foreign newspapers, magazines, and film history books. We also extracted numerous clippings from these images and then finalized the design for Mogambo's costume. This included a black coat with a golden monogram print, a long frilled shirt, and long boot-like shoes. This is how Amrish Puri's Mogambo costume was created.
It took seven days to make, and I charged around 25,000 rupees. But Boney Kapoor was so impressed with my workmanship that he rewarded me with an additional 10,000 rupees. This brought my total to 35,000 rupees for making Mogambo's costume.
Amrish Puri had such a reaction
In his book, Madhav Agasti further recounts Amrish Puri's reaction when he first saw the Mogambo costume. He wrote, "For Amrish Puri's look test, I had him wear the Mogambo costume I had made. He looked absolutely stunning in that look, and after wearing it, the only thing Puri said was, 'Mogambo is happy.'"
