News Topical, Digital Desk : Pakistan's military has launched a scathing attack on former Prime Minister and jailed Imran Khan. Khan had called Army Chief General Asim Munir mentally unstable. In response, the army accused him of being mentally ill and accused him of using family visits and social media posts to create a hostile atmosphere against the military.

During a televised briefing, military spokesman Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, without naming Imran Khan, described him as a " narcissist , " meaning "extremely self-centered." He said Imran Khan has the mindset that if he's not in power, nothing should happen.

Imran's sister recently visited him in jail and said afterward that her brother was extremely angry with the army chief. Chaudhry claimed that people who visited Imran in jail were being used to "spread venom" against the army.

Imran's accusation

A day earlier, Imran Khan had posted on the social media platform X, accusing General Munir of undermining the constitution and law and order. He said that he and his wife had been jailed on false charges and were being subjected to mental pressure by being kept in isolation.

His spokesman, Zulfiqar Bukhari, described the army's press conference as an emotional reaction, saying it was an attempt to intimidate Imran Khan and his party and intensify the crackdown. Bukhari also claimed that meetings with Imran Khan were now banned.

what the army said

The army recalled that Imran Khan's supporters had attacked several military bases after his arrest on May 9, 2023. " Isn't this the same person who orchestrated those attacks? " Chaudhry asked, although Imran Khan has denied these allegations.

73-year-old Imran is in jail in connection with a 2023 corruption case and is facing several other cases. The army spokesman said that Imran and his party, the PTI, are attempting to create instability in the country and are colluding with outside forces. He added that the decision to ban Imran's party rests with the civilian government, not the military.

Tension increased after the new appointment

The controversy comes after President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif appointed General Munir to the newly created post of Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) , which was created to ensure better coordination between the three services.

Imran Khan was removed from power following a no-confidence motion in April 2022. His party still claims that the 2024 elections were rigged to favor PM Sharif, a charge the government denies.
