A Belgian court has rejected the bail plea of scamster Mehul Choksi, who has been absconding from India since 2018 after defrauding Punjab National Bank of about Rs 13,500 crore.

Choksi's lawyer met him

A three-judge bench ruled out bail after the hearing. Earlier, Choksi's Indian lawyer Vijay Aggarwal met Choksi in prison in Antwerp before the bail hearing.

Choksi was arrested last week by Belgian police in Antwerp at the request of Indian authorities. Choksi was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Belgium, where he was arrested.

India is trying for the extradition of Choksi

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India is making efforts for Choksi's extradition. Jaiswal said, he was arrested in Belgium on the basis of our extradition request. We are working closely with Belgium for his extradition to India so that he can face trial in the country.

India has requested the Belgian government

It is worth noting that Indian agencies have requested the Belgian government to extradite him. The extradition treaty between India and Belgium provides for handing over each other's economic offenders. The only problem in Mehul's case is that Choksi's health is poor. He can try to escape on this basis.
