News Topical, Digital Desk : President Draupadi Murmu on Tuesday conferred Padma awards on 68 eminent personalities including former Chief Justice of India Jagdish Singh Khehar, dancer Shobhana Chandrakumar, actor Anant Nag and Vice Chancellor of the prestigious King George Medical University Sonia Nityananda. On January 25, on the eve of the 76th Republic Day, names of a total of 139 eminent personalities were announced for the country's civilian awards - Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The President on Tuesday conferred awards to 68 selected people at the second civilian decoration ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan in the presence of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and others.

Sharda Sinha awarded Padma Vibhushan posthumously

Earlier on April 28, at the first award ceremony, President Murmu had conferred Padma awards on 71 personalities. At the ceremony held at the Republic Pavilion of Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday, President Murmu conferred the Padma Vibhushan, the country's second highest civilian award for public affairs, on Justice Khehar, while the award for late Kathak dancer Kumudini Rajnikant Lakhia and late famous folk singer Sharda Sinha was received by Lakhia's grandson and Sinha's son respectively.

9 eminent personalities awarded Padma Bhushan

The President conferred the Padma Bhushan to nine eminent personalities during the ceremony, including dancer and actress Shobhana Chandrakumar, businessman Nalli Kuppuswami Chetty, archaeologist Kailash Nath Dixit, dancer Jatin Goswami, actor Anant Nag and Sadhvi Ritambhara. The awards for economist Bibek Debroy and former Maharashtra chief minister and Lok Sabha speaker Manohar Joshi were received by Debroy's wife and Joshi's son.

Those honoured with the Padma Shri include eminent immunologist and KGMU vice-chancellor Sonia Nithyananda, footballer E Mani Vijayan, singer Ashwini Bhide Deshpande, actor Ashok Laxman Saraf, mask maker Reba Kanta Mahanta and musician Ricky Gyan Kej. Renowned theatre artist and acting coach Barry John, folk musician and renowned parai player Velu Asan, businessman Sajjan Bhajanka, Dr Neerja Bhatla, scientist Ajay V Bhatt, author Sant Ram Deswal, spiritual leader Acharya Jonas Mejetti and Farooq Ahmad Mir were among the other Padma Shri awardees.

Difference between Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri

These awards are given in various disciplines and fields such as arts, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports and civil service. Padma Vibhushan is given for exceptional and distinguished service; Padma Bhushan for distinguished service of high order and Padma Shri for distinguished service in any field. Since the Narendra Modi government came to power in 2014, it has started honouring 'unsung heroes' by conferring Padma Awards, thus turning the Padma Awards into 'people's Padma'.
