News Topical, Digital Desk : Railway workers suddenly began a protest at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus railway station, causing a complete halt to Central Railway train traffic. Passengers are facing significant difficulties.
Motormen have launched a protest at CSMT railway station. Around 50 to 60 motormen gathered at the station and staged a sit-in protest. During the protest, loud slogans were raised in the station premises.
The reason behind the movement
An internal investigation is underway into a major train accident in Mumbra a few days ago, in which five passengers were killed and nine others injured. Following the investigation, a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder (IPC 304A) was filed against two railway engineers.
The railway employees' union has protested this action. They say the decision to file a case against the engineers is wrong and will continue their agitation until the case is withdrawn.
What was the Mumbra accident?
The accident occurred when two local trains came too close to each other near Mumbra, causing the tracks to sag. According to the FIR, engineers failed to carry out timely repairs despite the rains washing away soil and gravel beneath the tracks.
Senior Section Engineer Samar Yadav and Assistant Divisional Engineer Vishal Dolas are accused of negligence, leading to the accident. The VJTI report stated that welding work on the tracks was left incomplete after heavy rain, causing the two tracks to become unbalanced and come closer to each other, leading to the accident. This entire incident has disrupted rail services, stranded large crowds of passengers at the station, and the railway administration is working to restore normalcy.
