News Topical, Digital Desk : The Mahabharata is not just the saga of a great war, but a tale of the depths where a single word could change entire destinies. What unfolded on the battlefield of Kurukshetra was not merely the valor and strategy of the warriors, but also the age-old curses that followed the warriors like shadows.
1. Parashurama's curse on Karna
Karna, considered one of history's greatest warriors, was defeated not by a lack of weapons, but by the curse of Lord Parashurama. Karna disguised himself as a Brahmin and learned from Parashurama. Once, to avoid disturbing his guru's sleep, Karna endured the excruciating pain of an insect bite on his foot. Parashurama realized that only a Kshatriya possessed such endurance.
According to ancient texts and mythology, an enraged Parashurama cursed Karna, saying, "The knowledge you have learned by lying will be forgotten when you need it most." This was the reason why Karna was unable to use his Brahmastra at the last moment against Arjuna, turning the tide of the battle.
2. Yudhishthira's curse on women
After the Mahabharata war ended, when Mother Kunti revealed to the Pandavas that Karna was their eldest brother, the Pandavas were plunged into grief. Yudhishthira was deeply saddened by the fact that he had unwittingly killed his own eldest brother.
He believed that if he had known this secret earlier, such a massive massacre could have been prevented. The scriptures mention that in this anguish, Yudhishthira cursed the entire female race, saying, "From now on, no woman will be able to keep any secret or matter hidden." It is believed that this curse led to the saying that women cannot keep secrets to themselves.
3. Gandhari's curse on Shri Krishna
After the war ended, when Krishna, drenched in grief , approached Gandhari. Seeing the bodies of her 100 sons, Gandhari was utterly furious. She admitted that if Krishna had wanted, the war could have been stopped. Gandhari cursed Krishna, "Just as you have caused the destruction of my clan, in exactly 36 years, your Yadu dynasty will also be destroyed by infighting, and the city of Dwarka will sink into the sea."
According to the scriptures written by Maharishi Ved Vyas, due to this curse, after the departure of Krishna, the Yaduvanshis fought among themselves and got destroyed and the Dwapar Yuga ended and the Kali Yuga arrived.
