Magh Mela 2026: How long will the Magh Mela last, what will be the dates of the royal bath?

• January 18: Mauni Amavasya , the third major bath
• January 23: Vasant Panchami , the fourth main bath
• February 1: Maghi Purnima , the fifth major bath (main bath for Kalpavasis)
• February 15: Mahashivratri, closing of the fair and the last bath

Importance of Magh Mela

According to mythology, during the churning of the ocean between the gods and demons to obtain nectar, four drops of nectar fell at four different locations: Haridwar, Ujjain, Nashik, and Prayagraj. Today, the Kumbh Mela is held every 12 years at these locations. The Magh Mela is held annually in Prayagraj.

It is believed that taking a holy dip in the Sangam during the Magh Mela washes away all sins and grants salvation. For this reason, millions of devotees attend this grand event every year.

What is Kalpavas?

Kalpvas is a crucial part of the Magh Mela. During this period, Kalpvasis (pilgrims) live in simple tents or huts on the banks of the Sangam for a full month. During this period, they practice austerity and spiritual practice for self-purification. Kalpvasis bathe in the Ganges daily. Chanting mantras, singing kirtans, preaching, and engaging in meditation are also key parts of their daily routine. Kalpvas is a way of practicing spiritual life by abstaining from worldly pleasures.
