News Topical, Digital Desk : A hearing was held on Tuesday in the ongoing dispute over the traditional lighting of lamps on the hilltop on the day of Karthigai Deepam at Madurai's famous Thirupparankundram Murugan Temple. During the hearing, Madras High Court Judge G.R. Swaminathan directed top officials to appear in court for non-compliance with his order.

In fact, Madras High Court Judge G.R. Swaminathan, while hearing the contempt petition filed by Ram Ravikumar, has issued a stern order to top officials of Tamil Nadu, including the Chief Secretary, DGP, Madurai Collector and Deputy Commissioner of Police, to appear in court in person.

Contempt of court proceedings

Speaking to the media, advocate Karthikeyan N. stated that a statutory notice has been issued to the Madurai Deputy Commissioner of Police, asking why contempt of court proceedings should not be initiated against him.
The petitioner's lawyer stated that officials are attempting to drag out the case without complying with the court order.

Meanwhile, Additional Advocate General Veera Kathiravan, appearing for the state, said that the special leave petition filed by Tamil Nadu authorities challenging the single judge order regarding lighting of lamps on the top of Tirupparankundram hill is pending in the Supreme Court.

What is the whole matter

On December 1, Justice Swaminathan ordered the temple management to arrange for the lighting of lamps on a stone pillar on the Thirupparankundram hill during the Karthigai Deepam festival on December 3. However, when the ceremony failed to take place despite the court order, the judge allowed the petitioner and ten others to light the lamps on the evening of December 3, accompanied by CISF security.
Subsequently, on December 4, accepting the contempt petition, the court quashed the prohibitory order imposed by the District Collector during the Karthigai Deepam festival.
