Also, the brother promises the sister that he will always protect her. But do you know how this festival started? There are many stories related to many religions and history behind it (Raksha Bandhan 2024 History), which you must know about.
The story is related to Krishna-Draupadi
There is a story related to Mahabharata that Lord Krishna considered Draupadi as his sister. Let us tell you that Draupadi is considered one of the Panchkanyas . Once Lord Krishna's finger got hurt and started bleeding. To stop this, Draupadi tore the end of her sari and bandaged his finger.
Seeing this devotion and love of Draupadi, Lord Krishna promised to protect her and saved Draupadi's honour by performing a miracle at the time of Draupadi's chirharan in the court of Kauravas. It is believed that since then the festival of Rakshabandhan started being celebrated, in which sisters tie a raw thread on the wrist of their brothers and in return the brothers promise to protect their sisters.
Story of Goddess Lakshmi and King Bali
There is also a popular story related to Rakshabandhan, which is related to Goddess Lakshmi and King Bali. Bali was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu and he had promised him that he would protect him. For this, he had become his gatekeeper. Because of this, Goddess Lakshmi was living alone in Vaikunth. To bring her husband back, she took the form of an ordinary woman and went to King Bali to seek shelter. Bali gave her a place to live in his palace. With the arrival of Goddess Lakshmi, happiness and prosperity started increasing in Bali's life .
Then one day on the full moon day of the month of Sawan, Goddess Lakshmi tied a thread of cotton on Bali's wrist and wished him well. Happy with this, Bali asked her to ask for any wish she wanted. At this, Goddess Lakshmi pointed towards the gatekeeper and appeared in her real form. Lord Vishnu also took his real form. Bali fulfilled his promise and asked Lord Vishnu to go to Vaikunth with Goddess Lakshmi. Since then the festival of Raksha Bandhan started being celebrated.
The story of Queen Karnavati and Humayun
It is impossible to talk about Rakshabandhan and not mention Rani Karnavati. Rani Karnavati was married to Mewar's king Rana Sanga. Rana Sanga was martyred in a war with Gujarat's ruler Bahadur Shah. In such a situation, to save Mewar from defeat, Rani Karnavati sent a Rakhi in a letter to Mughal ruler Humayun and prayed for help, but this Rakhi reached Emperor Humayun very late. Because of this, by the time Humayun reached Mewar with his army, Rani Karnavati had committed Jauhar and Bahadur Shah had won.
