News Topical, Digital Desk : The British government has launched a campaign to warn foreign students, including Indians, against overstaying their visas or seeking asylum in the country when their study visas expire.

Ready to take strict action- Yvette Kapoor

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper told the BBC, “We are taking a number of practical steps to control the chaos. Around 15,000 students each year often claim asylum when their visas expire. We are sending a clear message that the asylum system is not for people who simply want to extend their visas.”

Thousands of foreign students enrolled at UK universities may receive these direct messages from the Home Office when their visas expire.

Leave the UK voluntarily or face deportation

The message said any request for asylum assistance will be assessed strictly based on the criteria. Students who do not have the legal right to stay in the UK must leave the UK voluntarily or face deportation.

UK government figures released last month showed 111,000 people are expected to claim asylum in the UK in the year ending in June 2025, the highest number since 1979.

98,014 visas issued to Indian students in June 2025

The data also showed that 98,014 visas were issued to Indian students in June 2025. Sanam Arora, president of the National Indian Students and Alumni Union (NISAU) UK, said, "Students need not worry. Follow the terms of your visa. If help is needed, contact us. We will guide."
