News Topical, Digital Desk : Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. It is located on the Sahyadri mountain in Pune district of Maharashtra. This Jyotirlinga is associated with the story of the war between Lord Shiva and the demon Bhima and Lord Shiva's establishment there as a Jyotirlinga. 

According to its legend, Bhima, the son of Ravana's brother Kumbhakarna, had become a tyrant. He wanted to take revenge for his father's death from Lord Rama. He performed a rigorous penance of Brahmaji and received many boons from him. After this, becoming invincible, he captured King Sudakshin. 

The kig performed penance of Shiva by making a Parthiv Shivling. When Bhima came to kill the king, Lord Shiva appeared and killed Bhima. The gods requested Lord Shiva to reside at that place in the form of Jyotirlinga. After this, this place came to be known as Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga. 

His name is also Moteshwar Mahadev 

Bhima river flows near this temple. According to another legend, in Treta Yuga, a war took place here between Lord Shiva and the demon Tripurasura. During this time, so much heat was generated here that Bhima river dried up. It is said that water came back to this river due to the sweat of Lord Shiva.

This Jyotirlinga is a symbol of Lord Shiva's power and his compassion towards his devotees. This Jyotirlinga is a symbol of the fact that Lord Shiva is always ready to protect true devotees. The size of this Jyotirlinga is very big and thick. Because of this, Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga is also called Moteshwar Mahadev. 

How to reach here 

Near the Jyotirlinga is the Bhimashankar cave, which is located in the mountainous region. This place is also a wildlife conservation area and various species of wildlife are protected here. To go here you have to reach Pune city. It is connected to all the major cities of the country by air, road and rail. 

To reach Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga, which is located about 120 km from Pune, you can go by bus, taxi or private vehicle. Bus facility is available regularly for Bhimashankar from Pune at 5:30 am to 4 pm.
