News Topical, Digital Desk : The Supreme Court on Wednesday extended the tenure of the Justice Gita Mittal committee, constituted to oversee the relief and rehabilitation of victims of ethnic violence in Manipur, till July 31.

A bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi extended the tenure of the committee after it was informed that its term had ended in July last year.

The bench was also informed that the committee has so far submitted 42 reports to the Supreme Court on various aspects related to the rehabilitation of victims. On August 7, 2023, the Supreme Court ordered the formation of a committee of three former women High Court judges to oversee the relief and rehabilitation of victims and the provision of compensation.

Additionally, former Maharashtra Police Chief Dattatreya Padsalgikar was directed to oversee the investigation of the criminal cases. The committee was authorized to submit its report directly to the Supreme Court.

The committee, headed by former Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court Gita Mittal, includes former Bombay High Court judge (retired) Shalini P. Joshi and former Delhi High Court judge Asha Menon.
